LAD/Blog #32: Wilson's 14 Points of Peace

During peace negotiations in Versailles, Wilson proclaimed that the world needed to work together to maintain peace. He emphasized the end of secret alliances and introduced his fourteen points which are outlined below:
  1. No secret alliances/ treaties
  2. Freedom of the seas
  3. Equality of trade conditions between all nations and a decrease of economic barriers between nations
  4. Reduction of armaments
  5. Impartial adjustment of colonial claims
  6. Restoration of Russian land
  7. The Evacuation and restoration of Belgium
  8. Alsace-Lorraine returned to France
  9. Italian borders recognized based on nationality
  10. Self Determination in Austria-Hungarian territory
  11. Self-Determination in Balkan Lands
  12. Self-Determination around Turkey
  13. Independent Poland
  14. Establish a league of nations to maintain peace
Wilson closed by stating he was willing to fight for his points and also advised against harsh reparations on Germany.

Wilson's League of Nations was never successful, however a similar organization, the United Nations, was formed in 1945 and had much greater support from the world powers.
