LAD #38: Truman Doctrine

Truman created a foreign policy that gave aid to nations at risk of falling to Communism. The first situation which he mentioned was that of Greece asking for economic and financial assistance. Truman noted many issues in Greece and concluded that the United States must help them. Moreover, he acknowledged that Britain's ability to give aid was decreasing, and that the United Nations in its current state would be unable to solve the issue. Truman also claimed that Turkey deserved the same help as Greece. Truman defined the Truman doctrine through the three statements: "I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures. I believe that we must assist free peoples to work out their own destinies in their own way. I believe that our help should be primarily through economic and financial aid which is essential to economic stability and orderly political processes." Truman asked congress to provide $400,000,000 in assistance to Greece and Turkey and compared that to the $341,000,000,000 the United States spent on WWII. Truman also asks congress to grant permission to troops and American personnel to go to Greece and Turkey to help with their reconstruction efforts.
