LAD/Blog #30: Wilson's First Inaugural

Wilson opened his first inaugural address by acknowledging the unity of the government in the Democratic party. He narrowed the cause of this change to a change in peoples' perspectives and the strong desire to "rectify wrong, alleviate suffering, and to set the weak in the way of strength and hope." Wilson claimed the support of the people strengthened the government enough to stand against big businesses. He also acknowledged the issues that occurred because of industrialization and proposed that the problems be fixed. Wilson targeted the issues surrounding tariffs, food quality, the environment, currency, and labor laws. He stated that it was the duty of the law "to keep sound the society it serves." Wilson closed by asking for the support of the people to ensure the success of their mission for reform.
