On January 1, 1863 Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation which states all slaves will be free. Anyone preventing this freedom will be committing an act of rebellion against the United States. Lincoln asks that freed slaves in rebellious states refrain from violence and seek jobs that pay a fair wage, and makes it known that freed slaves will be welcomed into the military.

The 13th Amendment of the Constitution banned slavery from ever returning to the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation outlawed slavery, but adding the law to the constitution ensured the freedom would last long after Lincoln left office. |
