Calhoun correctly predicted the South's secession from the United States ten years later.
Calhoun spoke to the senate about sectionalism in the United States between the north and the south and proclaimed the root of the hostility was the want for justice in the south and the argument over slavery. the south felt they were carrying the brunt of the taxes and were not being benefited by the BUS. Their economy was harmed by tariffs while the north thrived because of them. The north was against slavery and the Whigs could not let the practice continue as they felt it was their own sin if they did not help the Americans in bondage. The south could not accept this and did not want change. Calhoun suggested the only solution was to appeal to the south's interests to avoid secession.
