Blog #4: Rethinking the Revolution

I learned that Benjamin Franklin wrote memoirs and George Washington edited old correspondences in order to make themselves look better in history. John Adams had predicted that history would be misrepresented and he was right. Certain aspects were emphasized and others weren't.

Multiple factors led to the censorship of the Revolutionary war and the downplay of the violence. Artwork portraying the war does not include any of the gruesome details of war and idealizes battle scenes. The political impact of the war is remembered while the lives lost are not.

Many people consider the civil war to have had a greater impact on American history than the revolutionary war, because the violence and bloodiness were emphasized, and there are photos and paintings that show the unpleasantries of war.

George Washington never said anything memorable in his speeches while Lincoln's Gettysburg address will always be remembered and brings attention to the lives lost in the civil war. The lack of words like this by Washington prevent the legacy of the soldiers from reaching that of those during the civil war.

Independence day used to be more similar to memorial day and was centered around the remembrance of the valor of the patriots and the lives that were lost. Over time, the political aspect of the holiday took more precedence and the celebration of the anniversary changed.

Similarly to the Civil war, Vietnam was a milestone in military technology. The Civil war is considered to be the first modern war. Photos taken of the soldiers gave civilians a glimpse into the horrors of war by placing faces with names. A century later, the war in Vietnam was filmed and photographed, exposing civilians to war at a new level. Vietnam will always be remembered as a violent and unpopular war because of this.
