Bryan gave his "Cross of Gold" Speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. During his speech, he declared that his cause was as holy as liberty. He then stated that the Democrats represented the whole of the population as one rather than individuals. Bryan emphasized that they were not at the convention to create conflict, but rather to do the right thing. He recognized the right of the federal government to control money and levy taxes. Bryan did not want a gold standard because it gave too much power to the rich.
