LAD/Blog #3: Declaration of Independence

Democratic Principles Stated in the Intro
The first paragraph states that all men are created equal and are born with rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which cannot be usurped. If they are then the people have the right to change or abolish the government.

Five Grievances
1. The forced quartering of British troops by colonial families
2. Cut off trade with the rest of the world
3. Taxation without representation
4. Deprivation of trial by jury of peers
5. The holding of trials for pretended accusations in England

Summary of Final Paragraph
In the last paragraph the colonies declare independence and cut all ties with Britain, claiming that they have the right to "levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do".

Lincoln's Gettysburg Address referenced the Declaration of Independence when he introduced his speech with the now famous lines "our score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal".
